Basemetal Resource Information System for Pithoragarh District, Kumaon Himalaya A Remote Sensing & GIS Approach

About the Project:

Information presented through this website details the findings of a pilot project on the basemetal resources of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, assigned to the author in response to a proposal titled Basemetal Resource Information System for the Uttaranchal (Kumaon) Himalaya A Remote Sensing & GIS Approach submitted to the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.  The proposal envisaged collecting and collating all available information on known mineral occurrences in the entire Kumaon Himalaya, filling of essential data gaps as and where identified by limited field work and laboratory investigation, and putting all data in a Web based Geographic Information System which could be used freely by all investigators to model the nature of metallogeny in the region and identify areas of potential mineralization.

Mineral exploration in the Himalaya is fraught with various problems.  Inhospitable weather, rugged terrain, inaccessibility, lack of basic infrastructure, communication and transportation are some of the factors which are daunting to many a geologist from venturing into this unexplored territory.  There is, however, a great deal that the local communities can do by way of basic ground work before experts can step in for follow-up to action. This section elicits the support of local population in conducting preliminary surveys aimed at identification of wallrock alteration/mineralization in areas that have been identified as potential targets.  Go to this section if you are not a geologist but still want to be part of an exploration programme.
